Anti-oppressive Practice

I continue to learn and work towards anti-oppressive counselling practices. Anti-oppressive counselling includes:

  • using an intersectional lens to recognize how systemic oppression and injustice impacts people’s mental health and well-being
  • recognizing the power dynamic in the counsellor/client relationship
  • working collaboratively with people, centering their lived experience and knowledge
  • asking for consent about counselling modalities and practices I use
  • critically reflecting on my assumptions and bias and how I occupy positions of power and privilege
  • supporting and resourcing myself through counselling, embodied exercises and parts work
  • engaging in social justice work and advocacy
